Story Telling and Design
I’ve just had an enlightening moment in my design journey: story matters—not just a little, but a lot.
I used to think good design was just about making things look nice or work well. But now, I’ve realised something much deeper that connects people to a product — its story.
Think about it. We all love stories. Since we were kids, stories have helped us learn, feel, imagine, and remember. So why wouldn't that same idea work in design?
When we add a story to a product, it becomes more than just an object. It becomes something people can connect with. A story adds context. It explains the “why” behind the design. It helps people understand its purpose, how it fits into their lives, and even how it can make them feel.
A good story can:
Make complex ideas easier to understand
Help people relate to your product
Make your message more memorable
Inspire and motivate people to take action
Storytelling in design isn’t about writing a novel. It’s about adding meaning — a clear beginning, middle, and end. Who’s the product for? What problem is it solving? What journey does the user go on? Answering these questions through storytelling helps both the designer and the user see the bigger picture.
And here’s the best part: it doesn’t have to be complicated. Just start with what’s real and human. A feeling. A situation. A need.
So, from now on, I’ll be thinking less about features first and more about feelings. Because at the heart of every great design is a great story — and that’s what truly makes it stick.
